Permanent Life Insurance
There are two types of "permanent" life insurance, Universal Life and Whole Life.
Universal life insurance is designed to offer flexibility in terms of design and funding. In basic design, universal life is intended as a permanent insurance product that can remain in force to age 121 with a minimum of cash surrender value. It can be designed on a cash surrender value platform as well, with higher premiums designed to mimic whole life insurance and provide higher cash surrender values.
Whole life insurance is designed to provide insurance coverage for a person's whole life. Most whole life policies endow at age 121 now (used to be age 100). Whole life insurance is designed to provide a stable death benefit at even the minimum guaranteed earning of the insurance company on the policy (usually 3%). Some companies pay dividends on whole life policies which can be taken as cash or re-invested in the policy to increase the death benefit.
